Jail guard slain in Mexico ambush

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga – A 28-year-old jail guard detailed at the Capitol was gunned down by an assassin believed to be a former communist rebel in front of a refilling station in Barangay San Antonio, Mexico town yesterday.

Supt. Niel Miro, Mexico chief of police, identified the victim as Christman Allan Lapus of Brgy. Camba, Arayat, Pampanga.

In his report to Senior Supt. Oscar Albayalde, acting director of the Pampanga Provincial Police Office (PPO), Miro said Lapus suffered four gunshot wounds in the body and was rushed to a nearby hospital but expired moments later.

One of the possible motives being eyed by investigators, police sources said, is love triangle. The victim reportedly had a “secret affair” with the girlfriend of one of the inmates at the provincial jail. The detainee is a former member of the Rebolusyonaryong Hukbong Bayan (RHB) charged of illegal possession of firearm and explosives last year.

The source said Lapus was transferred to Capitol after his superior discovered the “affair” between the victim and a certain “Dianna”.

Miro said police probers are still evaluating all information gathered from the crime scene and people privy to the victim’s activities.

Lapus was on his way to Arayat on board a Honda Civic car when waylaid near the Mexico town spillway in front of Phoenix refilling station past 9 a.m. by motorcycle-riding-suspect.

The suspect fled heading to Arayat town, according to sketchy police report.

Police said bystanders rushed the victim to a nearby hospital for treatment but expired while undergoing surgery at the Mexico District Hospital.

Miro said investigation is ongoing to determine the real motive but probers gave more weight on love triangle than any other angles.

Scene of the crime operatives recovered four spent casings for caliber .45 pistol, stated in the police report. – Jess Malabanan
